Lyme Disease Awareness Month

Lyme Disease Awareness Month

May 30, 7:30am - May 30, 8:00pm

Essex Middle River Veterinary Center1609 Eastern BlvdEssex, MD21221 Map May is Lyme Disease ...

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to dogs through the bite of a deer tick. Currently, of all dogs tested for Lyme disease in the state of Maryland, 5% tested positive. This is not only important because it allows us to protect our pets, but it also allows us to determine human infections. Since dogs and humans share their environment, if a dog tests positive for lyme disease, it is likely that their human(s) could test positive as well. Most importantly, however, we can not get infected by our dog(s), only by the bite of a deer tick.
According to the Merck veterinary manual, the most common signs of lyme disease in dogs include fever, loss of appetite, painful or swollen joints, intermittent lameness, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy. If left untreated, lyme disease can damage the kidneys, nervous system, and heart. Sadly, lyme disease affecting the kidneys is generally fatal.
Lyme disease is diagnosed in dogs through an antibody test. The antibody test that EMRVC uses is called the “4Dx” or “tick and heartworm test”. The benefits of this test are that it not only can identify lyme disease infections, but also other tick borne diseases (anaplasma, ehrlichia), and heartworm disease.
The good news is that lyme disease is preventable and treatable. Prevention is achieved with an oral or topical medication. EMRVC has the topical option of Parastar Plus, which is a monthly application between the shoulder blades to kill all the different types of ticks and fleas. Bravecto is our recommended oral option for its effectiveness, ease of administration, and 12 week duration.
If your dog has been diagnosed with lyme disease, your veterinarian will discuss performing a lyme quantitative C6 antibody test. This test will determine the severity of the infection. Our doctors will recommend treatment with antibiotics to reduce the amount of bacteria in your dog’s system, which will reduce and/or prevent any symptoms. Doctors may also recommend checking your pet’s urine to make sure that lyme disease is not negatively affecting their kidneys.

Ticks can be very hard to find on your pet. A common misconception is that ticks can only survive in the warmer months. This could not be further from the truth. Ticks do not recognize changes in seasons. Because of that, EMRVC recommends year round flea/tick prevention. Call our office at 410-687-1111 to discuss the best course of treatment for your pet.
